Meal times
As you collected your new puppy, you were most likely given some of the food that the puppy had been fed on. It is initially best to stick to this food, as any rapid change in food can upset the puppy’s tummy. Should you want to change to another brand it is best to take specialist advice and then make the change gradually, watching for any adverse effects that may develop ie skin irritation, vomiting etc. Any such changes should be discussed with a qualified advisor.
How much and how often you should feed your puppy will depend on the breed and size of the dog, it is generally small amounts between four and six times a day. A young puppy’s stomach is quite small and too much food all at once will only result in the puppy regurgitating the meal.
After preparing your puppy’s food make sure that they are waiting at a suitable distance and are seated and calm before you call them in to eat,
I would recommend that you make them wait a short time (1 or 2 minutes) before you call them in to eat, this will teach them manners and stop them rushing in
Never feed titbits from the table, this will only encourage them to beg and although this may appear sweet when they are young it will soon become something you wish you had never started as they sit beside you drooling whilst you are trying to eat. I would recommend that you completely ignore your puppy as you sit down to eat, if there is no reward they will soon learn to leave you in peace.
Fresh water should also be available at all times.
